Materials Science and Engineering is a field in which the relationship between structure and properties of materials in order to design new products to meet the growing needs are examined. Today, with increased research in the field of nanotechnology, materials engineering has become one of the leading strings. In the first step, an engineer identifies and studies the microscopic structure via scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, or similar methods and equipment. In the next step, the properties of materials will be measured and improved.

In the general classification, materials engineering is divided into main groups of metals, ceramics, polymers, composites, biomaterials, and semiconductors.

Given the importance and role of infrastructure and heavy industries, including the production of metals and industrial components in the development of the country, the Department of materials engineering was established in October 1394 to accept and train materials and metallurgical engineering undergraduate students. From 1396, it has started accepting students for master’s degrees in Nanomaterials. This department has 7 faculty members, including 3 associate professors and 5 assistant professors. Currently, the students of the department include 143 undergraduate and 8 MS students.

This department has active laboratories in the fields of metals, polymers, ceramics, nanocomposites, and biomaterials such as the Mechanical Properties of Materials Lab, Metal Forming Lab, Metallography and Microscopy Lab, Heat Treatment Lab, Surface & Corrosion Lab, and Solidification & Casting Workshop.
