Introduction to the Sediment Processing Group

The Sediment Processing Research Group at the Urmia Lake Research Institute is one of the institute’s key applied and scientific research units. The group focuses on the study of sediments within Lake Urmia and its catchment basin, conducting research and educational activities on sediment composition, pollutant sources, and sedimentary changes over time. The importance of these studies lies in understanding environmental processes, monitoring pollution, and identifying opportunities for the sustainable economic utilization of mineral and geothermal resources across West Azerbaijan Province.

Through the application of modern sediment analysis techniques, the group aims to generate accurate and reliable data to support sustainable natural resource management, mitigate environmental impacts, and contribute to regional economic development. Collaboration with local organizations, governmental bodies, and stakeholders enables the group to align its research with the practical needs of the region and to propose effective, science-based solutions.

The main research areas of the Sediment Processing Research Group include:

  • Monitoring and assessment of heavy metal and nutrient contamination in sediments and water resources
  • Identifying the sources of pollutants and proposing strategies for impact reduction
  • Investigating the effects of anthropogenic and geological factors on sediment and water quality
  • Studying sediment and rock geochemistry and geology to identify mineral resources and assess their economic potential
  • Evaluating and managing mineral and geothermal water resources to promote sustainable development and geotourism
  • Quantitative and qualitative monitoring of sediment dynamics in Lake Urmia and surrounding plains

By generating applied scientific knowledge, offering innovative solutions, and fostering collaborative research, the Sediment Processing Research Group plays a vital role in environmental protection and the sustainable utilization of natural resources in West Azerbaijan Province.
