Faculty of Letters and Humanities
The Faculty of Letters and Humanities of Urmia University originally developed out of the formation of the Department of Educational Sciences in 1977 as a service department for teaching educational courses. This department has been responsible for teaching 32 courses of pedagogical fields at Urmia University. Along with the development of this Department, other professors were active in teaching general courses such as the Islamic Studies, Persian Language, Physical Education and English Language courses at the University. With the formation of the Department of Persian Language and Literature in 1988, Faculty of Letters and Humanities was established as the fourth faculty of Urmia University in the city campus located in Shahid Beheshti Street (Daneshkadeh).
This faculty started its activities with the aim of training and providing specialized and skilled human resources in 1988 by the admission of the first department of students in undergraduate level in the field of Persian Language and Literature in 1988, and Physical Education in 1989. Due to the limited physical and educational space of the Faculty of Letters and Humanities in the city campus located on Shahid Beheshti Street (Daneshkadeh) in 1992, the faculty moved to the current campus located in Valfajr Boulevard 2, opposite to the former Radio and Television Department, or Sada-va- Sima Street. During the past years, new educational departments, including the Department of Economics in 1991, the Department of English Language and Literature in 1996, the Department of History in 1997, the Department of Accounting in 1999, the Department of Business Management in 2000, and the Department of Geography in 2005 were added to the faculty. In 2006, the departments of Economics, Accounting and Business Management were separated from the Faculty of Letters and Humanities, and were included within the independent Faculty of Economics and Management.
Following the educational development of the Faculty of Letters and Humanities, the Department of Islamic Jurisprudence and Law was separated from the Department of Islamic Studies of the Faculty and started operating as an independent department in 2007. In 2010, the second faculty, the Faculty of Physical Education, was separated from this faculty and began its educational and research activities as an independent faculty. Along with the educational development of the Faculty of Letters and Humanities, Department of Psychology got the license to admit undergraduate students in 2017 and began to be an independent department under the Department of Educational Sciences, though it had already had students in the master and doctoral degrees in Educational Psychology and General Psychology since 2003. In 2019, the Faculty of Letters and Humanities started admitting students as the newest educational department by obtaining a license to establish a bachelor's degree in the field of Sociology.
At present, the Faculty of Letters and Humanities is admitting domestic and international students for 9 departments in three levels of bachelor, master and doctorate. This college has 2176 students, of which 2045 are domestic students and 131 are foreign students. In terms of education, 1336 students are studying at the undergraduate level, 628 students are studying at the master's level and 212 students are studying at the doctoral level. 2045 students are native, and 131 students are international. In order to fulfill the social responsibility of the university. The Faculty is implementing joint research projects with the executive organs of the province and executive consultations.
It has 67 faculty members, including 11 professors, 17 associate professors, 34 assistant professors, 5 instructors, and 25 administrative and service staff. From the beginning of its establishment until now, the management of this college has been the responsibility of Mr. Mahboub Talei, the scientific members of the Department of Persian Language and Literature from 1992 to 1997, Dr. Abdullah Tolouei Azar, the assistant professors of the Department of Persian Language and Literature from 1997 to 2002, Professor Mir Mohammad Seyed Abbaszadeh, full professor of the Department of Educational Sciences from 2002 to 2007, Dr. Seyed Mehdi Salehi, associate professor of the Department of Islamic Jurisprudence and Law from 2007 to 2013, and Dr. Abdullah Tolouei Azar again from 2013 to 2020. At present, and Dr. Afshar Kabiri, associate professor of the Department of Sociology from 2020 to 2021. the management of this college is in charge of Dr. Bahman Nozhat, professor of the Department of Persian Language and Literature.
