The Department of English at Urmia University was founded in 1996, offering undergraduate program in TEFL. The orientation of its undergraduate programwas shifted to English Language and Literature in 1997. More than 800 BA students have graduated since then. Our department launched its MA program in TESOL/TEFL in 2006, and ever since over 60 candidates have successfully completed their MA studies in TEFL. There are currently more than 30 MA students pursuing their post-graduate studies in this department. 

Urmia University launched its PhD program in TEFL/TESOL in 2012 and currently there are two groups of PhD students (7 in total) undertaking thier postgraduate studies at Urmia University. A similar PhD program in TEFL/TESOL is also held in the International Campus of Urmia University (http://pardis.urmia.ac.ir/). The department is to embark upon running it BA program in TEFL/TESOL  soon following its approval by Iran’s Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology and Iran’s Measurement Organization.

The faculty members in this department hold degrees from some of the most accredited universities in the UK, including theUniversity of Leeds , the University of Surrey , and  the University of East Anglia , as well as from top universities in Iran, including Tehran University ,Tabriz University and Allame Tabatabaie University .

Our full time academic staff include: Dr Sima Modir Khameneh Dr Mohammad Mohammadi Dr Javad Gholami Dr Karim Sadeghi ,  Dr Parviz AlaviniaDr Sara Jalali , Dr. Mohammad Hossein Parvaz, Dr. Mahdi Sarkhosh, Dr. Farah Ghaderi,  Mr. Shahrouz Javidi Mr Mehdipour ; Our future staff (now PhD Candidate) is Mrs Zargarzadeh.

In addition, there are currently 20 EFL teachers with MA/PhD degrees in ELT-related disciplines who work with the department on a part-time basis. These staff, mostly graduates of the department, are predominantly invloved in running ESP /EAP and general English courses as well as French and English literature courses at Urmia University.
